Novo Holdings, a major investment entity managing assets for the Novo Nordisk Foundation, is sharpening its strategy for India. The firm is actively seeking opportunities in single-specialty hospitals and contract drug manufacturers, aiming to capitalize on India's expanding healthcare market. According to Amit Kakar, managing partner and head of Asia, Novo Holdings has seen its average investment ticket size in India grow from $20-$30 million to $50-$125 million, signaling a commitment to larger deals. They have also set up a dedicated team in Mumbai to facilitate this deeper engagement.
Single-specialty hospitals, which focus on specific areas like oncology or mother and child health, are identified as a key growth area, projected to reach $40.14 billion by 2032. Novo Holdings is also exploring investments in contract drugmakers, particularly those specializing in complex biological drugs, and areas like senior care and post-surgical support.
Impact This increased focus and investment from a major global player like Novo Holdings is expected to catalyze growth in India's specialized healthcare and pharmaceutical manufacturing sectors. It could lead to increased funding for these businesses, drive innovation, and potentially pave the way for future public listings. The move also signifies growing confidence in the Indian healthcare market's potential. Rating: 7/10
