Torrent Pharma Q2 Profit Falls 10% Amid Merger Integration

Torrent Pharmaceuticals reported a 10% drop in net profit to ₹534 crore for the September 2026 quarter, despite a 51% jump in revenue to ₹4,979 crore. The decline was largely due to costs related to the merger with JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals. Investors are now watching to see if the company's new scale leads to better margins in the coming quarters.

Torrent Pharmaceuticals faced a contrast in its second-quarter performance for the fiscal year 2027. While the company recorded a significant 51% increase in revenue, reaching ₹4,979 crore, net profit declined by 10% year-on-year to ₹534 crore. This divergence is primarily attributed to the costs and operational changes following the company's merger with JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, which became effective in July 2026.

The integration process required the company to realign its quality management systems and optimize its global business networks. These structural adjustments acted as a temporary drain on the company's profitability. Despite these bottom-line pressures, the company’s operating performance remained strong, with operating EBITDA rising by 53.8% to ₹1,666 crore and EBITDA margins reaching 33.5%. The JB Chemicals business contributed ₹1,086 crore to the total revenue in its first full quarter as part of the combined entity.

Regional performance for the company was mixed. The domestic India business saw strong growth, rising 20% to ₹2,181 crore and performing better than the general market. International operations also saw growth, with the Brazilian and US markets recording increases of 38% and 24%, respectively. However, the German market posed challenges, with revenue falling 7%. This decline was caused by supply chain difficulties related to a third-party supplier and the loss of significant, high-volume pharmaceutical tenders in the region.

To support its long-term technical and product capabilities, Torrent Pharma increased its spending on research and development by 35%, reaching ₹211 crore for the quarter. This investment accounts for roughly 4.2% of its total revenue. Following the announcement, the stock price closed 2.78% lower at ₹4,482 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Going forward, the key factor for investors will be whether the company can successfully stabilize its margins now that the initial phase of the merger is underway. Market participants will likely track whether the company can resolve its supply chain issues in the German market and whether the combined entity can achieve the expected efficiency from the integration of JB Chemicals.
