Tata Memorial Centre has partnered with The Cherian Foundation to provide 500 premium natural hair wigs to cancer patients. This initiative, valued at ₹1.5 crore, aims to support underprivileged patients undergoing chemotherapy by addressing the emotional impact of hair loss. The wigs will be distributed through the Tata Memorial Hospital network.
Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has formally announced a partnership with The Cherian Foundation to supply 500 premium natural human hair wigs to cancer patients. The initiative, valued at ₹1.5 crore, is designed to support economically disadvantaged patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, a treatment that frequently results in hair loss.
Supporting Patient Wellbeing
The project operates under The Cherian Foundation's existing 'Gift Hair Gift Confidence' program. By distributing these high-quality wigs, the collaboration seeks to address the psychological and social challenges that patients face during their treatment. Clinical teams at the hospital have observed that hair loss can lead to significant distress, social stigma, and a decline in confidence, which can sometimes result in patients discontinuing their treatment cycles.
Operational Hub
Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital will serve as the central coordination hub for this initiative. This setup is intended to streamline the distribution process, ensuring that the wigs reach patients within the broader TMC network in an organized and transparent manner. The hospital administration emphasized that the program is part of a broader commitment to improve the overall quality of life for patients alongside standard medical care.
The Cost Barrier
High-quality natural hair wigs often cost around ₹30,000 and are generally not covered by medical insurance policies. This high out-of-pocket expense often makes them inaccessible for many families. By providing these items free of charge, the partnership aims to remove a financial barrier that many cancer patients face. The Cherian Foundation has committed to an annual production and donation target of 1,000 wigs, building on its history of distributing over 2,500 units across 35 hospitals since 2014.
Future updates regarding this initiative will likely track the scale of distribution and the hospital’s efforts to maintain the ongoing supply of these natural hair products to meet patient demand.
