Takeda's QDENGA Vaccine Gets India Approval for Dengue

India’s drug regulator has approved Takeda Biopharmaceuticals' QDENGA, the nation's first vaccine against dengue. The vaccine is cleared for individuals aged 4 to 60 and covers all four virus types. This approval introduces a new preventive tool for a disease that contributes significantly to India’s annual healthcare burden.

The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted market authorization to Takeda Biopharmaceuticals for its dengue vaccine, QDENGA. This regulatory nod makes it the first vaccine approved in India to combat the dengue virus, which causes recurring seasonal health crises across the country.

Vaccine Usage and Administration

The vaccine is approved for use in individuals aged 4 to 60 years. A notable aspect of this vaccine is that it protects against all four serotypes of the dengue virus. Furthermore, it can be administered to people regardless of whether they have been infected with dengue in the past, meaning patients do not need a blood test to check for prior exposure before receiving the shot. The dosing schedule consists of two 0.5 mL injections given three months apart, administered under the skin.

Impact on India’s Disease Burden

Dengue remains a major public health challenge in India. Official data reported over 113,000 cases in 2025, though public health experts often note that the actual number of annual infections is likely much higher due to many cases going unreported or undiagnosed. By providing a new preventive option, this approval aims to reduce the hospitalizations and healthcare costs associated with severe dengue outbreaks.

Global Context and Commercial Rollout

Takeda has already secured approvals for QDENGA in 43 other countries, including markets across Asia, Latin America, and Europe. The company has stated that over 32 million doses have been distributed globally to date. For investors and healthcare stakeholders, the introduction of the vaccine into the Indian market creates a new segment in the preventive healthcare space.

While this is a significant regulatory advancement, the actual commercial impact will depend on the pricing strategy, the government’s inclusion of the vaccine in public immunization programs, and public adoption rates. As the vaccine rolls out, the key monitorables will be the company’s distribution strategy in India, any partnership arrangements for local manufacturing or marketing, and the uptake in private and public health sectors.
