Syngene Restructures Under New CEO to Combat Strategic Drift

Syngene International is implementing a significant operational overhaul under new CEO Siddharth Mittal to address declining growth and leadership instability. Following a return to profitability in the second quarter of FY27, the company is shifting focus toward high-value CDMO contracts and cost optimization. Investors are watching whether these measures can successfully resolve underutilized capacity and improve long-term margins.

Syngene International has initiated a fundamental operational restructuring under new Managing Director and CEO Siddharth Mittal, who took charge on July 1, 2026. This move marks a pivot in strategy intended to reverse years of inconsistent performance, leadership churn, and declining growth. The company’s recent performance shows early signs of stabilization, as it returned to profitability in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027.

In the second quarter of FY27, Syngene reported revenue of Rs 833 crore. While this represents a 9% decline compared to the same period last year, it reflects a 13% growth on a sequential basis. The company reported a net profit of Rs 32 crore, a positive turnaround from the net loss of Rs 9 crore recorded in the previous quarter. Operating EBITDA margins also improved to 18%, marking a 6 percentage point increase over the first quarter of the fiscal year. These figures suggest that the new management’s focus on efficiency is beginning to impact the bottom line.

Pivoting to High-Value CDMO Services

Under the new leadership, Syngene is recalibrating its business model. For years, the company relied heavily on traditional drug discovery services. Now, the firm is prioritizing high-value contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) services. This shift is designed to reduce the company's reliance on lower-margin work and improve competitiveness against global peers. A key highlight of this strategy is the progress at the company's US-based Bayview biologics facility, where Syngene has recently secured its first commercial manufacturing contract.

To support this pivot, management has launched a comprehensive cost-control campaign. This includes rationalizing manpower and streamlining operational processes that were previously fragmented. The overhaul is also intended to fix the company’s commercial strategy, which faced challenges in recent years due to the lack of a dedicated business development head and inconsistent client acquisition in major markets like Europe and the US.

Managing Operational and Sector Risks

Despite the positive shift, investors should be aware that the transformation is a long-term process. The company is dealing with the legacy of aggressive infrastructure expansion, which resulted in significant underutilized capacity at its facilities. Effectively managing these assets while maintaining cost discipline will be essential for sustained margin improvement. Furthermore, the broader pharmaceutical R&D sector faces macro-economic uncertainty, which can influence client demand and the size of order books.

Financial performance also remains sensitive to external factors, including foreign exchange fluctuations, which can impact profitability. Investors will be closely tracking the progress of the Bayview facility’s capacity utilization and the company’s ability to secure additional high-value contracts. The next important update for shareholders will be the management’s commentary on project commissioning timelines and the consistency of the margin recovery in upcoming quarters.
