Sun Pharma Shares Fall as Q2 Profit Declines 36%

Sun Pharma shares traded lower on Monday after the company reported a 36.2% drop in quarterly profit, despite an 11.8% rise in revenue. The profit decline was primarily caused by large one-time costs, while investors are also monitoring slower sales growth for the company's key specialty drug, Ilumya.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries saw its share price decline on Monday following the release of its second-quarter results for the 2027 fiscal year. The stock faced downward pressure as investors reacted to a significant drop in net profit, which fell 36.2% to ₹1,989 crore compared to the same period last year. This sharp decline was largely due to a ₹1,269 crore one-time charge related to legal settlements and acquisition costs.

Despite the hit to the bottom line, the company’s revenue growth remained steady. Sun Pharma reported revenue of ₹161 billion, an increase of 11.8% compared to the previous year. This indicates that while the core business continues to generate more money, costs related to one-off events and high spending on research have affected total earnings.

Specialty Segment Focus

The most closely watched part of the business remains the specialty drug segment, where the company’s flagship product, Ilumya, is a major contributor. While global specialty sales grew by 6.9%, this pace was slower than investors had expected. Analysts are concerned that execution hurdles in the US market for Ilumya may be limiting its short-term potential. This has led several brokerage firms to lower their earnings estimates for the current fiscal year.

However, the outlook for Ilumya is not entirely negative. As of October 30, 2026, the company received USFDA approval to market Ilumya for the treatment of adults with active psoriatic arthritis. This development offers a potential path for future growth, provided the company can overcome the current execution challenges and competitive pressures in the US market.

Risks and Market Outlook

Beyond the performance of Ilumya, the company faces broader challenges. The US generics market is seeing increased competition and pricing pressure, particularly for products like lenalidomide. Rising spending on research and development, combined with the integration risks of the pending Organon acquisition, are other factors that could influence financial results in the coming quarters.

Investors are now looking ahead to see if the company can improve its profit margins and successfully manage the integration of new assets. The key for shareholders will be watching how quickly the specialty drug segment recovers and whether the recent USFDA approval can translate into higher sales in the upcoming quarters.
