Shanghai-based StairMed Technology is developing a brain-computer interface implantable via the neck in roughly 10 minutes, avoiding open-brain surgery. The startup has raised 1.1 billion yuan, backed by investors including Alibaba and Tencent. As a private, early-stage firm, the technology is currently limited to animal trials, with human testing yet to begin.

Shanghai-based StairMed Technology has unveiled a new approach to brain-computer interface (BCI) implantation, aiming to make the process minimally invasive. The company is developing a system designed to be inserted through the vascular system in the neck, which could potentially reduce the implantation time to about 10 minutes. This method seeks to eliminate the need for traditional open-skull surgery, which is often required for existing BCI devices.

The company is currently at the animal testing stage, with experiments successfully conducted on sheep. The system uses ultra-flexible electrodes, measuring about 1 micrometer in thickness, designed to record nerve cell signals while reducing potential damage to brain tissue. While the technical design aims for a faster and less intrusive procedure, it is important for observers to note that human trials have not yet commenced. The safety and effectiveness of this method in human patients remain to be validated through future clinical studies.

StairMed has attracted significant attention from institutional investors, securing a total of over 1.1 billion yuan in funding over the past year. In March, the company closed a funding round of 500 million yuan, led by major tech entities Alibaba and Tencent. This capital infusion highlights strong institutional interest in the neurotechnology sector, even as the company remains in the research and development phase.

This development occurs against the backdrop of China’s increasing focus on the BCI industry. Regulatory authorities in China have already shown willingness to approve advanced neurotechnology; for instance, Shanghai-based Neuracle received commercial approval for an invasive BCI in April. While this sector-wide momentum is a positive indicator for the broader industry, StairMed’s specific technology remains experimental.

For those following the neurotechnology space, the primary risks involve the significant execution and technical hurdles inherent in early-stage medical device development. Navigating delicate blood vessels for placement, ensuring the long-term stability of the implant within the body, and successfully translating nerve signals are complex challenges that the company must overcome before it can move toward commercial application. As a private entity, StairMed does not trade on public stock exchanges, meaning investors cannot gain exposure to the company through equity markets at this time. The key monitorable for the industry will be the progress of the startup's planned human trials and any subsequent regulatory updates.
