Rewa Hospital Launches Probe After Maternal Deaths

Authorities at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, have initiated an inquiry after a 25-year-old woman and her newborn died following a caesarean section. The family has alleged medical negligence, sparking public outrage. Two nursing staff members have been suspended while a medical board conducts an investigation into the case.

Authorities at the government-run Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital (SGMH) in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, have launched a formal investigation following the deaths of a 25-year-old woman, Kalpana Mishra, and her newborn baby. The tragedy, which occurred on August 26, 2026, has drawn significant public attention and triggered protests over allegations of medical negligence at the facility.

The incident gained prominence after a video circulated on social media platforms showing the patient, before her surgery, expressing severe distress and pleading to be moved from the hospital, claiming she feared for her life if she remained. Her family has since leveled serious allegations against the hospital, including claims of unprofessional conduct by the nursing staff and a potential overdose of anesthesia during the caesarean section procedure.

Institutional Response and Administrative Action

In response to the public outcry and the family's accusations, hospital leadership—affiliated with the Shyam Shah Medical College—has taken immediate administrative steps to address the concerns. Dean Sunil Agarwal and Superintendent Rahul Mishra have confirmed that two nursing officers on duty at the time of the event have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

An official inquiry committee has been constituted to examine the circumstances leading to the deaths. To ensure transparency, a medical board from the district health department has been tasked with performing the post-mortem examinations. Local government representatives have also visited the site to engage with the affected family and assure the public that the investigation will be thorough and that any identified procedural failures will lead to further disciplinary measures.

Accountability in Public Healthcare

For citizens, this incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding accountability and service standards within government-funded healthcare institutions. While the hospital authorities have denied procedural lapses thus far, the viral nature of the allegations has placed significant pressure on the administration to demonstrate that medical protocols were followed correctly.

The primary focus for the public and the local administration remains the findings of the medical board. The upcoming post-mortem report and the inquiry committee's final assessment will be the critical next steps in determining whether the deaths were the result of complications or if there was indeed a failure in medical oversight. The outcome of this probe is expected to be a key indicator of the hospital's governance and its ability to maintain public trust in its clinical operations.
