The study, which analyzed 350 scientific papers, argues that while protein is a necessary component for muscle maintenance in active individuals, the average sedentary adult may be consuming more than is beneficial for long-term health.

The research, led by Dudley Lamming of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, indicates that protein restriction may assist in weight management and better blood sugar control, even when total calorie consumption remains constant. The study identifies specific biological mechanisms that drive these changes. When protein intake is lowered, the body often sees an increase in the hormone fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). This hormone is associated with increased energy expenditure, reduced inflammation, and improved metabolic health, factors that have been linked to increased lifespan in animal studies involving flies and rodents.

The review points to specific amino acids—methionine, isoleucine, and valine—as primary drivers of biological growth processes that can accelerate aging if consumed in excess. High levels of these amino acids may activate pathways that potentially increase the risk of obesity and age-related chronic illnesses. The researchers noted that while protein-fortified foods are widely marketed, they may not offer the intended health benefits for those who are not physically active.
