RPG Life Sciences to Invest ₹500 Crore in API Expansion

RPG Life Sciences is set to spend ₹500 crore over the next 12 months to scale its Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) capacity. This investment is part of a larger ₹700 crore strategic plan, which includes recent acquisitions and the formation of a new subsidiary, RPG Active Pharma. Investors are watching how this expansion influences long-term revenue targets and margins following a strong first-quarter performance.

RPG Life Sciences has announced an aggressive expansion plan for its Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) business, earmarking ₹500 crore for investment over the next 12 months. This capital allocation is a key component of the company's broader ₹700 crore commitment aimed at boosting its manufacturing footprint and strengthening its position in both domestic and international pharmaceutical markets.

Strategic Subsidiary and Recent Acquisitions

The company is executing a significant structural shift to support this growth. As of August 2026, RPG Life Sciences transferred its API business to a newly formed, wholly owned subsidiary named RPG Active Pharma. This entity has already secured a ₹243 crore equity infusion from private equity firm InvAscent, providing the necessary liquidity to fund the current expansion phase. To accelerate its capacity build-out, the company has also completed strategic acquisitions, including Raghava Life Sciences for approximately ₹135 crore and Actis Generics for ₹80 crore. These moves are designed to consolidate manufacturing capabilities and reduce the time required to bring new API products to market.

Financial Context and Growth Targets

The expansion strategy comes off the back of a solid financial performance in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The company reported a 15.8% increase in revenue, with EBITDA margins touching 24.5%. This profitability suggests the firm has room to fund its growth ambitions, though the upcoming capital spending will be the primary driver for its long-term objective of achieving ₹2,000–2,500 crore in revenue by 2030. The management continues to prioritize high-value segments like nephrology and cardiology, while simultaneously scaling the API business to serve a wider global client base.

Risks and Execution Considerations

While the company is scaling rapidly, investors should note several execution-related challenges. The primary risk lies in integrating the newly acquired assets and ensuring they deliver the projected cost efficiencies and revenue synergies. Because the company is building its API capacity, it faces inherent risks regarding regulatory compliance and international quality standards, such as EU-GMP, which are critical for global export. Furthermore, the company remains dependent on external sourcing for certain APIs until its own plant upgrades and new capacities are fully stabilized. Changes in raw material costs or competitive pressures in the global API market could also place pressure on future profit margins, which investors will monitor in coming quarters to see if the company maintains its current efficiency levels.
