A 19-year-old woman is in critical condition following a C-section at Beed District Hospital, where surgical items were allegedly left in her abdomen. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, issuing notices to medical staff as public accountability in healthcare administration comes under scrutiny.
A serious medical negligence incident has been reported at the government-run Beed District Hospital in Maharashtra, where a 19-year-old patient remains in critical condition following a Cesarean section. The patient, identified as Sandhya Suraj Gaikwad, underwent the surgical procedure on August 1, 2026, and was discharged by hospital authorities four days later.
Shortly after returning home, the patient developed severe abdominal pain and began vomiting. Her family sought urgent medical intervention at a private facility, where clinical examinations revealed the presence of foreign objects within her abdomen. Due to the complexity of the situation, she was transferred to Sassoon Hospital in Pune. A subsequent emergency surgery at the Pune facility confirmed the presence of surgical gloves and paper napkins, which were then removed.
Following the discovery, the patient’s family formally alleged gross negligence on the part of the medical team at the Beed District Hospital. They reported that despite clear signs of post-operative distress, including vomiting, the patient was discharged without thorough assessment, leading to the delay in corrective care.
The district administration has since acknowledged the gravity of the allegations. District Surgeon Dr. Satishkumar Solanke confirmed that an inquiry is underway to determine how foreign materials were left inside the patient during the procedure. The administration has issued show-cause notices to the attending doctors and medical staff involved in the original surgery. The hospital administration has stated that a comprehensive investigation will guide further administrative or legal actions.
From a public health oversight perspective, the incident highlights the critical need for strict surgical protocols and accountability in government-run healthcare institutions. As the investigation progresses, the primary focus remains on the medical findings of the probe and the corrective measures the district health department will implement to prevent such lapses in patient safety. The status of the staff involved and the potential for regulatory policy changes at the district level will be the key developments to track as authorities finalize their report.
