Natco Pharma Shares Dip 5% After Q1 Profit Drops 57%

Natco Pharma shares fell nearly 5% after the company reported a 57% decline in first-quarter net profit to ₹206.5 crore. Revenue dropped 45% year-on-year, primarily due to lower sales of the generic cancer drug Lenalidomide. While the board announced an interim dividend, the company also unveiled plans to raise ₹2,000 crore, which may lead to equity dilution.

Natco Pharma’s stock closed nearly 5% lower on Friday, August 14, 2026, following the release of its financial results for the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year. The company reported a consolidated net profit of ₹206.5 crore, a sharp 57% decline compared to the same period last year. Revenue from operations also saw a significant drop of 44.7% to ₹735.2 crore.

Impact of Product Concentration

The primary driver behind this weak performance was a sharp reduction in sales of the generic cancer medication Lenalidomide. Natco Pharma has historically relied on this specific drug for a significant portion of its revenue. When sales of a high-value product like this fluctuate, it directly impacts the company’s bottom line and profit margins. While the company stated that its domestic formulations and API businesses showed growth during the quarter, this was not enough to compensate for the lower revenue contribution from its key export product.

Profitability and Operational Pressure

The impact of lower sales was also visible in the company’s operational efficiency. Natco Pharma reported an EBITDA (a measure of operating profit) of ₹186 crore for the quarter, reflecting a 67.4% decline year-on-year. Consequently, the operating margin contracted to 25.3%. For investors, this margin pressure highlights the risks associated with product concentration, where the company's financial performance becomes heavily dependent on the lifecycle and demand of a few select drugs.

Fundraising Plans and Dividend

In addition to the quarterly numbers, the board of directors approved a proposal to raise up to ₹2,000 crore. The company intends to explore various options, including qualified institutional placements (QIP) or other instruments. If the company chooses to raise this capital through the issuance of new equity shares, it could lead to dilution for existing shareholders, meaning their percentage of ownership in the company may decrease. This, combined with the weak quarterly performance, has been a point of caution for market participants.

Despite the decline in profit, the company announced an interim dividend of ₹1.50 per equity share for the financial year 2026-27. The record date for this dividend has been set for August 20, 2026, and payments are scheduled to begin on August 26, 2026.

Going forward, the key monitorable for investors will be how the company manages its product mix to reduce reliance on specific drugs. Additionally, the market will closely track the details of the proposed fundraising and how the company plans to utilize these funds, as this will have long-term implications for the company's balance sheet and growth strategy.
