Moderna, Merck Stocks Surge After Cancer Vaccine Trial Success

Moderna and Merck confirmed their personalized cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, successfully met Phase 3 trial goals for treating melanoma when combined with Keytruda. Following the news, Moderna shares rose approximately 177%, while Merck gained over 10%. Investors are now tracking the path to regulatory approval and future testing for other cancer types.

Shares of Moderna and Merck & Co. saw sharp gains on August 19, 2026, following positive interim results from a late-stage clinical trial of their personalized cancer vaccine. The partnership's Phase 3 study, known as INTerpath-001, evaluated the experimental treatment—intismeran autogene—in combination with Merck’s established immunotherapy drug, Keytruda, for patients with resected stage IIB-IV melanoma.

Following the announcement, Moderna’s stock price jumped approximately 177%, while Merck shares rose by more than 10%. This strong market reaction reflects investor interest in the potential of mRNA technology to change cancer treatment by moving into personalized medicine.

The trial focused on patients who had their melanoma tumors surgically removed. The study successfully met its primary goal of Recurrence-Free Survival, which means a statistically significant number of patients remained cancer-free after treatment compared to those who received Keytruda alone. It also met key secondary goals related to preventing the spread of cancer to distant parts of the body. The companies reported no new safety concerns during this interim analysis.

The two companies operate a 50/50 partnership to develop and commercialize this therapy. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which affects both healthy and cancerous cells, this personalized vaccine is designed to train the patient's immune system to identify and attack specific mutations unique to their tumor.

While the results in melanoma are a significant development, there are important factors for investors to track. One key challenge is the manufacturing process. Because the vaccine is personalized for each patient, producing it at a large scale is a complex and time-consuming task. Furthermore, success in melanoma does not guarantee the same results in other cancer types. The companies are currently conducting studies on this vaccine for several other cancers, including lung, bladder, and kidney cancers.

The next major updates for investors will involve the detailed presentation of the trial data at upcoming medical meetings and the formal engagement with global regulatory authorities regarding potential approvals. The ability of the companies to maintain these results in broader trials and scale their manufacturing capabilities will be critical in the coming periods.
