Lupin Limited has secured USFDA approval for generic Modafinil tablets (100 mg and 200 mg) to treat sleep disorders, tapping into a USD 70.7 million U.S. market. While the move expands its CNS portfolio, investors are watching for margin trends amid ongoing pricing pressures in the U.S. generic sector.
Lupin Limited announced on Friday that it has received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to launch generic Modafinil tablets. The approval covers the 100 mg and 200 mg strengths of the medication, which is used to improve wakefulness in adults struggling with conditions such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder.
This drug is a bioequivalent version of the reference medication Provigil, currently marketed by Nuvo Pharmaceuticals. According to IQVIA data for the period ending July 2026, the specific category for Modafinil tablets in the U.S. market holds an annual sales volume of approximately USD 70.7 million. This approval provides Lupin with another path to expand its revenue footprint in its most important international market.
For investors, this development reinforces Lupin's strategy to strengthen its Central Nervous System (CNS) therapeutic portfolio. The company has a significant presence in the United States, which remains a key focus area for its growth. Financially, Lupin ended the last fiscal year in a strong position, with a net-cash-positive status and a net debt-to-equity ratio of -0.21 as of March 31, 2026. This financial health provides the company with flexibility to manage its global operations, which span across 15 manufacturing facilities.
However, the pharmaceutical sector in the United States continues to face challenges, including intense competition and pricing pressure on generic medicines. While this approval is a positive step, investors often monitor how effectively companies can maintain profitability amidst these market dynamics. Lupin has previously indicated its target of achieving a sustainable EBITDA margin in the range of 24% to 25% for the 2027 fiscal year. Achieving this target while balancing the costs of rolling out new products will be a key factor for the market to track.
Other operational factors include the need for consistent regulatory compliance across its manufacturing network and the potential impact of geopolitical issues on the supply of raw materials and solvents. On Friday, the stock was trading in the range of ₹2,111 to ₹2,132, reflecting broad trends in the pharmaceutical sector. Looking ahead, investors may focus on the company's timeline for the commercial launch of the product, its ability to capture market share from the reference drug, and future updates on margin performance.
