Researchers suggest that meal timing is as critical as calorie count for maintaining long-term health, particularly for those with evening chronotypes.

A new research study published in Frontiers in Nutrition has shed light on how the biological internal clock, or chronotype, influences physical health. Researchers from Griffith University observed 287 women aged 18 to 45, finding that those who naturally prefer staying up late—often called night owls—are at a higher risk of accumulating body fat and developing poor metabolic markers compared to morning-types.

Impact of Meal Timing on Metabolism

The study found that while total daily calorie intake remained similar between morning and evening groups, the distribution of food consumption differed significantly. Night owls tended to consume fewer nutrients in the morning and shifted their energy intake toward late-night hours, specifically between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. This pattern frequently involved eating energy-dense foods rich in carbohydrates and fats during a time when the body is biologically prepared for rest rather than energy processing.

This metabolic mismatch often results in poorer glucose regulation and unfavorable lipid profiles, which are key indicators of metabolic disease. The study highlights that the android-to-gynoid ratio—a measure of body fat distribution—was higher in those with late-night eating patterns, pointing toward a greater risk of abdominal obesity.

Chrononutrition as a Preventive Strategy

These findings emphasize the importance of chrononutrition, an emerging field that examines how the body's natural rhythms interact with diet. According to the researchers, modifying meal timing could serve as an effective strategy for individuals to improve health outcomes. Simply reducing the intake of energy-dense foods during late-night hours may help mitigate the increased risk of obesity associated with a preference for later bedtimes.
