Indian Pharma Revenue Seen Growing 13% In FY27 Amid Margin Risk

The Indian pharmaceutical industry is set for 11-13% revenue growth in fiscal 2027, driven by higher exports and domestic sales. While demand remains strong, rising raw material and logistics costs may squeeze profit margins by 150-200 basis points. Investors should track how companies manage these rising operational expenses.

The Indian pharmaceutical sector is heading toward a period of strong revenue growth, with projections for fiscal year 2027 suggesting an increase of 11-13%. According to data from Crisil Ratings, this growth is expected to come from a combination of expanding export reach and steady domestic demand.

The industry is actively shifting its export focus to reduce dependence on the United States market. Companies are increasingly entering European markets with complex products and biosimilars. Simultaneously, branded generics are finding success in emerging markets across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This strategy is expected to support export growth of 14-16% in rupee terms.

Domestic demand also appears steady, with a projected expansion of 9-11%. This growth is largely supported by the rising prevalence of chronic, lifestyle-related diseases that require long-term treatment. Analysts expect volume growth to reach 4-5% in the coming year, a notable improvement from the 2% levels observed over the past two years. This is being helped by better distribution networks in tier-2 and tier-3 cities and regular price updates.

However, there is a significant challenge regarding profitability. While revenue is increasing, operating margins are expected to soften, potentially dropping by 150-200 basis points to a range of 21.0-21.5%. This compression is primarily due to rising costs for raw materials, energy, and logistics, which have been complicated by geopolitical instability in West Asia.

Despite the pressure on margins, the overall financial position of the sector remains stable. Major players generally maintain strong balance sheets and sufficient cash reserves, which are expected to help them absorb these costs without undermining their long-term financial health. For investors, the key area to track will be whether companies can effectively manage rising operational expenses while continuing to scale their sales and distribution networks.
