Indian Pharma Q1 FY27: Domestic Growth Offsets US Struggles

Indian pharmaceutical companies expect 13-15% revenue growth in Q1 FY27, driven by strong domestic demand. However, profit margins face pressure from declining US generic sales and rising costs. While chronic therapies fuel local growth, the US market remains challenged by price erosion and the loss of major revenue contributors like Revlimid generics.

Detailed Coverage

Indian pharmaceutical companies are preparing for a mixed first-quarter performance for the fiscal year 2027. While domestic sales are showing strong momentum, the lucrative U.S. market continues to face headwinds that may impact overall profitability. Analysts from firms like HDFC Securities and Nuvama expect sector revenue to rise by 13% to 15% year-on-year, though profit after tax could see a decline of around 13%.

Domestic Growth Trends

The domestic formulation market is emerging as a primary pillar of strength, growing at 12% year-on-year during April and May 2026. This performance notably exceeds the three-year quarterly average of 9%. When accounting for recent strategic moves, such as the integration of JB Chemicals with Torrent Pharma, the sector's domestic revenue growth could reach 17%. Growth is particularly visible in specialty and chronic therapy areas, including oncology, anti-diabetic treatments—notably the rising uptake of GLP-1 drugs—as well as cardiac and urology segments. Companies such as Zydus Lifesciences, Torrent Pharma, Sun Pharma, and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories are positioned to benefit from this localized expansion.

US Market Challenges and Margin Pressure

Performance in the United States remains a concern as the sector grapples with intense generic competition and the fading impact of high-value drugs like Revlimid. Analysts project a 5% year-on-year decline in U.S. revenue for several major players. The base generics business is experiencing persistent price erosion, and a lack of significant new product launches is limiting recovery. Specific challenges include increased competition in products like Mirabegron and the withdrawal of treatments like Lanreotide.

Profit margins are also under pressure due to a combination of rising input costs, steady research and development spending, and higher sales, general, and administrative expenses. While the contract research, development, and manufacturing (CRDMO) segment is expected to maintain its margins, the overall profitability of the sector may lag behind revenue growth. Aurobindo Pharma is viewed as a potential outlier, with expectations of 9% year-on-year growth in U.S. revenue, supported by favorable currency exchange rates and the launch of generic Pomalyst.

Investors may monitor upcoming quarterly results to assess how companies manage these margin pressures and whether the domestic growth trajectory can sustain its current pace. Key monitorables include management commentary on price erosion in the U.S. base business, the progress of new drug pipelines, and the ability of firms to control operational costs amid inflationary pressures.
