Fermenta Biotech Gets FSSAI Nod for Plant-Based Vitamin D3

Fermenta Biotech has received FSSAI approval for its plant-based Vitamin D3, Vitadee Green, derived from soybean oil byproducts. This approval allows the ingredient to be used in foods and supplements, potentially boosting revenue for a company where Vitamin D already accounts for over 70% of total sales.

Detailed Coverage

Fermenta Biotech has secured regulatory approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for its new plant-derived Vitamin D3 product, Vitadee Green. This product is made using a byproduct from soybean oil refining, a process the company has been developing since 2014 to create a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional animal-sourced Vitamin D3.

Revenue Impact and Market Strategy

For Fermenta Biotech, Vitamin D is the primary revenue driver, accounting for more than 70% of its total income. In the fiscal year ended March 2026, the company reported total revenue of ₹551 crore. By expanding its portfolio to include a plant-based version that meets the growing demand for sustainable ingredients, the company aims to strengthen its position in the food and nutraceutical sectors. The approval allows the product to be used in common items like fortified milk and edible oils, providing a pathway for wider market reach.

Manufacturing and Sustainability

Managing Director Prashant Nagre has indicated that the production process uses byproducts from the soybean oil industry, which avoids the need to divert food crops for Vitamin D3 manufacturing. The company plans to increase production over the next three months to meet expected demand. Fermenta Biotech currently operates manufacturing plants in Kullu, Dahej, and Tirupati, with research operations based in Thane.

Investor Context and Monitoring

As the company works to scale up production, investors may monitor how quickly Vitadee Green is adopted by food and supplement manufacturers and whether it helps improve profit margins compared to traditional products. The company, which was previously a subsidiary of Duphar-Interfran Ltd, is currently listed on the BSE and has expressed plans for a listing on the NSE. A key area to track will be how the scaling of this new product impacts the company’s overall manufacturing costs and its ability to compete in both domestic and international markets. As with any manufacturing-heavy business, the company’s financial performance will remain tied to its success in managing production costs and maintaining consistent demand for its core Vitamin D business.
