Dr. Reddy's To Resume Semaglutide Sales In November

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories will restart global supplies of its diabetes and weight management drug, semaglutide, in November following a fix to its production process. The company targets 6 to 7 million units for 10 markets this fiscal year, with Canada serving as the primary focus for the relaunch.

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories is set to resume the global supply of its semaglutide product this November. This follows the company's decision to voluntarily pause marketing earlier this year to stabilize its manufacturing processes. The company confirmed that these production issues have now been resolved, allowing it to move forward with its distribution plans.

The company has set a production target of 6 to 7 million units across 10 international markets for the remainder of the current fiscal year. Canada is identified as the key market for this initial phase. Because no additional regulatory clearances are required there, the company expects to reach patients quickly and address pent-up demand for the medication.

Earlier this year, the manufacturing disruption forced the company to make a one-time financial provision of Rs 240 crore in the June quarter. This had impacted the company’s profit for that period. However, management has stated that they do not expect any further charges on the profit and loss statement resulting from these specific production challenges.

Semaglutide belongs to a class of drugs seeing high global demand for the management of diabetes and weight issues. Dr. Reddy's is positioning this drug as a major growth driver for the coming years. By moving early into emerging markets, such as its recent entry in Chile, the company is building a strategy that it plans to replicate elsewhere. The firm is also working on regulatory pathways to enter the United States and European markets, where generic alternatives for this medication remain limited.

The success of this relaunch depends on the company's ability to maintain a stable supply chain and avoid the production delays that caused the previous suspension. Moving forward, investors and analysts will likely monitor how effectively the company executes its supply targets, manages the regulatory process for entering larger markets like the US and Europe, and maintains consistent margins as it scales production.
