Dr Reddy’s Profit Slumps 69%, Srikakulam Unit Faces USFDA Audit

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories reported a 69% drop in Q1 profit to ₹443.5 crore, missing market estimates due to a ₹240 crore provision and higher operational costs. Simultaneously, the company’s Srikakulam manufacturing plant received three observations from the USFDA following a recent inspection.

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has reported a challenging first quarter for the 2026-27 financial year, marked by a significant decline in profitability and fresh regulatory scrutiny at one of its key manufacturing sites. The company’s net profit fell to ₹443.5 crore, a 69% decline compared to the ₹1,418 crore reported in the same period last year. This result trailed significantly behind market expectations.

Regulatory Update at Srikakulam

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) conducted an inspection at the company’s Srikakulam facility in Andhra Pradesh between July 20 and July 29, 2026. The inspection, which covered both Pre-Approval and Good Manufacturing Practices, resulted in the issuance of a Form 483 containing three observations. A Form 483 is issued when investigators observe conditions that may constitute violations of the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act. Dr Reddy's has confirmed it is working to address these findings within the required timeframe to maintain compliance.

Financial and Operational Pressure

The sharp drop in net profit was driven by both core business challenges and a specific ₹240 crore provision related to its semaglutide active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) business. This accounting adjustment significantly impacted the bottom line. Revenue from operations also saw a decline, dropping 6% year-on-year to ₹8,070.5 crore. The company’s operating margin also saw a notable contraction, falling to 12.5% from 26.7% in the previous year. Management pointed to rising costs in solvents and freight, partly linked to geopolitical pressures in West Asia, as key factors in this margin compression.

Segment Performance Highlights

The company experienced mixed results across its global markets. The North American segment, a critical area for the firm, saw a 35% year-on-year decline in revenue to ₹2,200 crore, largely due to lower sales of the drug Lenalidomide. Despite this, the company continues its expansion efforts in the region, having filed five new drug applications and one new application during the quarter. In contrast, Emerging Markets performed well, growing 31% to ₹1,830 crore, while the European business grew 13% to ₹1,440 crore, supported by new product introductions and favorable currency fluctuations.

Investors will likely track the company's ability to resolve the USFDA observations at the Srikakulam plant without significant delays to new product approvals. Furthermore, the market will monitor whether the current margin pressure caused by higher logistics and raw material costs stabilizes in the coming quarters, as well as the progress of the company’s new product pipeline in North America.
