Dognosis, a private Bengaluru-based startup, is developing a non-invasive cancer screening service using trained dogs and AI sensors. With Phase 2 clinical trial results showing roughly 90% sensitivity, the company is currently conducting a large-scale Phase 3 study. This innovation highlights the growing use of biotechnology to address early cancer detection gaps in India.

Bengaluru-based startup Dognosis is attempting to bridge the gap in early cancer detection by combining biological sensory capabilities with artificial intelligence. The company has developed a method where trained dogs analyze human breath samples to detect markers associated with various types of cancer. This system, which is currently in the trial phase, aims to provide a non-invasive screening tool that could eventually be used to detect the disease earlier than current standard methods.

The core of the technology relies on the heightened sense of smell in specific dog breeds. Patients breathe into a specialized mask, and these samples are then assessed by the canine team at the company’s facility. Simultaneously, sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms track the dogs' behavioral, physiological, and neural responses to the samples. The company uses this data to identify potential cancer markers without the need for traditional invasive procedures like biopsies or imaging tests in the initial screening phase.

Following successful Phase 2 trials, which involved over 1,500 participants and were published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the company reported approximately 90% to 91% sensitivity and specificity in detecting early-stage cancers. Dognosis is now conducting a more extensive Phase 3 trial. This study aims to recruit 10,000 participants across 10 hospitals in India to validate the system's effectiveness in larger, more diverse groups, including both asymptomatic individuals and those at higher risk.

While the technology aims to improve accessibility, it is important for observers to note that Dognosis is a private company and is not listed on any stock exchange. The business has raised approximately $2 million in funding from venture capital firms like Accel India and Boost VC. For investors and the healthcare sector, the primary value lies in the potential for a cost-effective, high-volume screening tool. However, the company faces significant operational and scientific challenges. Scaling this model requires consistent and high-quality training for the canine team, which is logistically complex compared to automated laboratory testing.

Furthermore, medical experts, including those from leading institutions like the Tata Memorial Centre, emphasize that such screening methods should serve as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, established diagnostic protocols. Regulatory adoption and integration into existing healthcare infrastructure will be critical hurdles. The company’s long-term success will depend on its ability to prove the consistency of its AI-canine model in real-world scenarios and demonstrate that it can reliably assist in early diagnosis without causing unnecessary false positives or negatives. The next key monitorable for the company will be the outcome of its ongoing Phase 3 clinical trial and its ability to secure the necessary partnerships to deploy the service in the healthcare market.
