Ashwagandha Safety Confirmed in Clinical Trial: Boost for Ayurveda

A 24-week study of 1,200 people confirms that standardized Ashwagandha root extract is safe for liver and kidney health. This scientific validation helps address safety concerns in export markets and supports the growing demand for high-quality, evidence-based Ayurvedic supplements.

A new large-scale clinical investigation has provided scientific validation for the safety of standardized Ashwagandha root extract. The study, which monitored 1,200 healthy adults across seven sites in India over 24 weeks, concluded that daily consumption of a 500 mg standardized extract does not cause liver or kidney damage. By tracking key biological markers like liver enzymes, bilirubin, and creatinine, researchers found that all levels remained within normal physiological ranges throughout the trial period.

The research also examined the compatibility of the herbal supplement with the Covishield vaccine. The study compared virus-neutralizing activity between participants taking the supplement and a placebo group, finding no significant difference in the immune response. This finding is relevant for consumers concerned about how herbal products might interact with medical treatments or vaccine-induced immunity.

For the Indian herbal and wellness industry, this development is a positive step toward meeting the strict safety standards required in international markets. Standardized clinical data is often a hurdle for Indian Ayurveda companies seeking to enter regulated markets like the United States, Europe, and Japan, where authorities require rigorous safety evidence. As the Ministry of Ayush continues to push for evidence-based research, such trials help bridge the gap between traditional practices and modern healthcare requirements.

However, investors and consumers should note that these findings are specific to standardized, high-quality extracts. The safety profile established in this study does not necessarily apply to all herbal products in the market, which may vary significantly in purity, concentration, and manufacturing quality. The key differentiator for companies in this sector remains the ability to produce standardized, clinically tested formulations. Moving forward, the industry’s ability to gain consumer trust—both in India and abroad—will likely depend on continued investments in clinical research and transparent quality standards, distinguishing professional manufacturers from the unorganized market.
