The Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) has inaugurated the BRICS BioDesign Centre to accelerate the development of affordable medical technology. This multinational initiative aims to foster innovation through collaboration with institutions in India, South Africa, Russia, and Brazil. As a government-backed ecosystem, the project focuses on reducing reliance on imported medical devices by scaling indigenous research.

The Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) officially launched the BRICS BioDesign Centre in New Delhi on September 11, 2026. This initiative is designed to create a specialized environment where researchers and engineers from member nations can collaborate on designing and prototyping affordable medical devices. By bridging the gap between academic research and market-ready products, the centre aims to address the reliance of emerging economies on imported healthcare equipment.

Strategic Focus on Medical Self-Reliance

The facility functions as a collaborative sandbox for institutions including the University of Cape Town, Sechenov University in Russia, and the Brazilian Society of Biomedical Engineering. By integrating clinical testing with engineering expertise, the hub is intended to help developers navigate the complex transition from scientific concepts to scalable manufacturing. This effort aligns with broader goals for technological resilience, attempting to lower the cost of essential diagnostic and therapeutic tools across the BRICS nations.
