Alkem Labs Keeps 'Buy' Rating From Nomura Despite Q1 Miss

Alkem Laboratories reported a 21.7% drop in Q1 FY27 net profit to ₹520 crore, missing market estimates. While Nomura retained its 'Buy' rating, it lowered the price target to ₹6,850. The miss was driven by a higher tax rate and sluggish domestic growth, while regulatory issues at the Daman facility continue to weigh on investor sentiment regarding U.S. operations.

Alkem Laboratories' financial performance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 showed a significant gap between reported figures and market expectations. The company recorded a consolidated net profit of ₹520 crore, marking a 21.7% decline on a year-on-year basis. While revenue grew by 10.9% to ₹3,740 crore, the bottom line was heavily impacted by a higher effective tax rate, which stood between 30% and 32%.

Following these results, Nomura maintained its 'Buy' rating on the stock but reduced its price target to ₹6,850. This downward revision reflects a more cautious stance on the company's near-term profitability, given the operational challenges and the current competitive environment in the domestic market.

Domestic growth, which is a major revenue driver, came in at approximately 10%. Analysts pointed out that this performance lagged behind key industry peers, hindered by stagnant growth in trade generics and the absence of price increases for products under the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). Additionally, higher operational expenses—driven by investments in new business segments and increased overheads—have put pressure on EBITDA margins.

One of the most critical factors for investors remains the regulatory situation at the company's Daman manufacturing facility. The plant currently carries an Official Action Indicated (OAI) classification from the U.S. health regulator. Since this facility contributes significantly to nearly 45% of Alkem's U.S. sales, any delay in clearing this regulatory hurdle poses a risk to export revenue and future operational stability. Investors should note that until the OAI status is resolved, the company faces uncertainty regarding its ability to fully capitalize on its U.S. market potential.

On a positive note, the brokerage highlighted the acquisition of Occlutech as a potential driver for long-term growth. While the integration and initial investment may cause temporary margin compression, the acquisition is expected to diversify the company's portfolio and contribute meaningfully to revenue in fiscal years 2027 and 2028. Nomura projects that as these new business segments scale up, the company may see improvements in operating leverage.

Moving forward, the primary monitorables for shareholders include the speed of resolution for the Daman facility’s regulatory status, improvements in domestic trade generic growth, and whether the company can successfully manage its rising operating costs to protect profit margins in the coming quarters.
