Akums Drugs Net Profit Surges 168% on Global CDMO Expansion

Akums Drugs reported a strong September quarter with net profit rising 168% to ₹115 crore. The company is now diversifying into color cosmetics via the acquisition of Oriflame India’s facilities while scaling its international contract manufacturing footprint in Europe and Africa.

Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals reported a sharp increase in profitability for the second quarter of the current fiscal year, with net profit rising 168% to ₹115 crore. The results, disclosed to the stock exchanges on November 2, 2026, also showed revenue growing 31.9% to ₹1,342 crore. This strong performance was supported by a notable improvement in operating margins, which widened to 14.5% compared to 9.3% in the same period last year.

The core driver of this performance remains the company’s Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO) business. As the primary revenue source, contributing ₹1,115 crore, this division is now shifting focus toward highly regulated international markets. The company has a pipeline of over 30 products under development specifically for the European market, with two products having already received approval. In addition to Europe, Akums is strengthening its footprint in Africa through a new joint venture with the Zambian government, aiming to export its manufacturing capabilities to developing regions.

Alongside this global push, the company has entered the consumer goods sector through the ₹56 crore acquisition of Oriflame India's manufacturing operations. This move allows Akums to enter the color cosmetics and skincare space. By manufacturing these consumer products, the company aims to diversify its revenue beyond traditional pharmaceutical drugs, which can be cyclical. This strategy is intended to better utilize its existing manufacturing infrastructure and protect overall profit margins.

While the expansion plans and recent financial growth provide a positive outlook, investors should keep track of several business risks. The company remains exposed to raw material and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) price fluctuations, which can impact profitability. Additionally, the success of its international strategy depends on execution—specifically, the ability to meet strict regulatory and quality standards in diverse global markets. The recent acquisition also brings integration risks, as the company works to combine the newly acquired beauty manufacturing assets with its existing systems.

Investors may monitor the company’s progress on the 30 products in its European R&D pipeline and the timeline for commercial production at its upcoming international facilities. As the company continues its transformation from a domestic-focused manufacturer to a broader player in both the CDMO and consumer goods segments, the consistency of its profit margins and its ability to manage debt-free operations will remain key areas to watch.
