A study led by Zhesi Yang of the University of Tokyo found that residents in Punjab do not fully understand the connection between farm stubble burning and the severe air pollution experienced in Delhi. Although aware of Delhi's pollution, many in Punjab did not consider stubble burning a primary cause, attributing it more to issues within the National Capital Region. The research surveyed 2,202 households and indicated that while 46% described Delhi's air as "severe", only 24.5% used the same term for Punjab's air. Fewer than 30% believed stubble burning was a significant contributor to Delhi's pollution. Furthermore, over 40% of respondents were unaware that air pollution increases the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, with nearly 60% stating smoke from burning fields did not affect their family's health. Attitudes towards stubble burning varied, though over 65% acknowledged it as a "big problem that must stop now". The study underscores an urgent need for targeted public education and policy interventions in Punjab to address these misconceptions and promote behavioral change.
