The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report has highlighted significant concerns regarding global climate action. The report states that the world is currently projected to experience a 2.8 degrees Celsius rise in global temperatures by the end of the century, far exceeding the 1.5°C target set in the Paris Agreement.
A key finding for India is that it recorded the largest absolute increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally between 2023 and 2024, adding 165 million tonnes. While its per capita emissions remain low compared to other major economies, the overall trend is rising. The report also notes that India, along with many other G20 nations, failed to submit its revised climate action plan, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), by the September 30 deadline. This inaction is expected to draw significant attention at the upcoming COP30 conference in Brazil.
Impact: This news could lead to increased pressure on Indian industries, particularly those reliant on fossil fuels, to accelerate their emission reduction strategies. Regulatory changes, carbon pricing mechanisms, and greater investment in renewable energy and sustainable technologies might be mandated. Companies that fail to adapt could face higher operating costs and reputational damage. Foreign investment may also be influenced by a country's climate performance and policy commitments. Impact Rating: 7/10
Difficult Terms: * **Greenhouse Gas (GHG)**: Gases in Earth's atmosphere that trap heat, such as carbon dioxide and methane. They contribute to the warming of the planet. * **Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)**: These are climate action plans submitted by countries under the Paris Agreement, outlining their targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change. They are typically updated every five years. * **Conference of Parties (COP)**: The supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It meets annually to review progress in tackling climate change. COP30 will be held in Belém, Brazil. * **Paris Agreement**: An international treaty adopted in 2015 that aims to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. * **G20**: The Group of Twenty is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union. It plays a major role in discussing and coordinating on major issues of global governance.
