West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has ordered a crackdown on illegal logging and announced plans to recruit thousands of new forest guards. The state also set an ambitious goal to plant 10 crore saplings this year, aiming to improve forest cover and strengthen environmental management.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a major administrative push to revitalize the state’s forestry sector. During a recent event in Salt Lake, the Chief Minister directed the Forest Department to intensify anti-poaching and anti-logging operations, emphasizing that illegal timber smuggling must be curbed through more transparent and robust enforcement.
Recruitment Plan for Forest Personnel
A critical component of this initiative is addressing the chronic staffing shortage within the Forest Department. Adhikari acknowledged that the lack of manpower has hindered effective forest patrolling and management. To resolve this, the state government has tasked the Police Recruitment Board with overseeing the selection process for thousands of new forest guards. By streamlining the recruitment through this board, the administration aims to fill these long-standing vacancies within a few months, which could significantly improve the department's ground-level operational capacity and field presence.
Environmental Targets and Afforestation
The government has set a target of planting 10 crore saplings across West Bengal within the current year. To achieve this, the Chief Minister has called upon all Members of the Legislative Assembly to participate actively by planting 100,000 saplings in their respective constituencies. This initiative is designed to create a state-wide effort to expand the green cover. Beyond immediate plantation goals, the government is also focusing on long-term ecological management, particularly in the Jangalmahal region, where recurring man-animal conflicts during harvest seasons have been a persistent challenge. The administration intends to implement strategies aimed at balancing necessary infrastructure development with wildlife conservation and community safety.
For investors and stakeholders observing the state’s administrative landscape, the primary monitorables will include the timeline for the forest guard recruitment process and the actual execution of the large-scale afforestation project. The success of these initiatives will depend on efficient fund allocation, the speed of hiring, and the ability of the Forest Department to manage large-scale field activities effectively in the coming quarters.
