NGT Orders Probe Into Paper Mills And Land Use In Uttar Pradesh

The National Green Tribunal has ordered investigations into environmental violations by paper mills in Muzaffarnagar and encroachment of waterbodies in Gautam Budh Nagar. These regulatory actions could impact operations for local manufacturing units found in violation of waste management and environmental norms.

The National Green Tribunal has initiated a series of environmental oversight measures targeting industrial and land-use practices in Uttar Pradesh. In a significant move, the tribunal directed the District Magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar to prepare a comprehensive, tabulated report on the status of local waterbodies. This report is required to identify the extent of encroachment and the specific parties involved. The Gautam Budh Nagar district is managed by the NOIDA Development Authority, the Greater NOIDA Development Authority, and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), which are responsible for land administration in these areas.

Muzaffarnagar Paper Mill Compliance

In a separate directive, the tribunal has tasked the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board with investigating allegations against approximately 30 paper mills located in Muzaffarnagar. The complaint alleges that these units are using unsegregated solid waste as fuel, which can lead to increased air pollution and breaches of waste management regulations. The regulatory board has been granted a three-month window to conduct ground verifications and implement remedial or punitive measures if any violations are confirmed. For investors, this creates a monitoring point regarding the compliance costs and operational continuity of paper manufacturing companies operating in the Muzaffarnagar region.

Environmental Enforcement In The Taj Trapezium Zone

Environmental enforcement is also intensifying in the Taj Trapezium Zone, a sensitive area around the Taj Mahal. The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board has confirmed action against two hot mix plants, Khushi Infotech and GG Infotech, located in the Agra district. The board has recommended an environmental compensation penalty of ₹12.18 lakh, citing violations of environmental laws. This enforcement highlights the strict regulatory environment maintained in the region under Supreme Court guidelines, which empower authorities to levy damages even in the absence of specific local legislation. Future developments will depend on the findings of the waterbody audit in Gautam Budh Nagar and the outcomes of the pollution investigation into the Muzaffarnagar paper industry, as non-compliance could lead to financial penalties or operational restrictions for affected entities.
