The felling process is scheduled to begin in October to manage the spread of the pest before it moves further through the dense forest canopy.
Dindori district is the primary focus of the operation, with 146,784 trees marked for removal. The Anuppur district will see the felling of 9,535 trees. The Karanjia range has been identified as the most critical area, hosting approximately 90 per cent of the affected trees in Dindori. The government's decision follows reports of systemic structural damage, with sawdust accumulation at the base of trees serving as a key indicator of the infestation's reach.
The state forest department previously attempted to control the pest using mechanical measures, including a trap-tree program and direct insect collection. Local tribal residents were engaged to collect insects, with the department spending Rs 38.5 lakh to procure nearly 1.9 million insects. Despite this financial and physical commitment, the infestation persisted at epidemic levels, leading to the decision for mass tree removal as a necessary surgical measure to protect the remaining forest health.
Sal trees are economically and ecologically important in India, serving as a significant source of timber and non-timber forest products like seeds and leaves. The loss of these trees represents a depletion of natural resources in the region, which may have indirect impacts on the local forest-dependent economy.
