Lotus flowers have begun to bloom in Kashmir’s Wular Lake, appearing for the second consecutive year after a nearly three-decade absence. This development is being viewed as a significant milestone in the ecological restoration of Asia's second-largest freshwater lake. The resurgence follows extensive conservation efforts led by the Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA), which has been working to clear millions of cubic meters of silt from the lakebed to restore its natural ecosystem.
The disappearance of the lotus, which began after the floods of 1992, had left a deep economic scar on the region. For decades, the heavy accumulation of silt altered the lake’s shallow depth, making it difficult for the aquatic plants to survive. For the local communities in villages such as SK Payeen, Kolhama, and Goorora, the loss of the lotus was more than an environmental change; it meant the loss of a traditional income source known as ‘nadru,’ or lotus stem, which is a staple in regional cuisine and a key agricultural commodity for the area.
To reverse this damage, WUCMA initiated large-scale desilting operations between 2020 and 2023, successfully clearing over five square kilometers of the lakebed. This physical intervention was critical to bringing back the habitat required for lotus growth. The return of these flowers is now seen as a tangible indicator that the lake's health is gradually improving.
Despite the current optimism, the ecological recovery remains fragile. The lake is highly sensitive to environmental factors, including heavy rainfall and upstream pollution, which can quickly alter water levels and water quality. Recent heavy rains have already demonstrated that rising water levels can submerge or damage vegetation in lower-lying areas. Furthermore, the long-term economic benefit for local families will depend on consistent maintenance of the lake's depth to prevent silt from returning.
Going forward, the sustainability of this recovery will depend on continued efforts to manage the catchment areas that feed into the lake. Monitoring the consistency of the lotus growth over the next few seasons will be essential to determine if the restored ecosystem can support a permanent return of the ‘nadru’ trade on a scale seen before the 1992 floods.
