Kolkata is facing an intensifying urban heat crisis, with a recent study from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur identifying 14 specific heat hotspots across the city. In these areas, land surface temperatures frequently climb to between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. Key locations such as Dalhousie Square, Esplanade, Park Street, and the rapidly developing New Town area are among the most impacted, showing significantly higher heat levels compared to greener suburban regions like Kalyani and Kanchrapara.
Impact of Urban Expansion on Local Climate
The research underscores a direct correlation between the city's changing landscape and its rising temperatures. Over the two decades from 2000 to 2020, Kolkata experienced a loss of approximately 60 square kilometers of tree cover, which accounts for nearly one-third of the municipal area. During the same period, water bodies across the city shrank by 10 square kilometers. As natural cooling agents were removed, the city saw a massive increase in impervious surfaces like asphalt and concrete, which expanded from covering 72% to 86% of the city's land footprint. These materials absorb and retain heat, intensifying the urban heat island effect.
Balancing Industrial Growth and Ecological Needs
While the West Bengal government continues to emphasize industrial regeneration and infrastructure development, the study highlights the economic and public health risks associated with ignoring ecological degradation. The loss of vegetation and water bodies is linked not only to higher temperatures but also to a potential decline in air quality. The researchers suggest that future urban planning must prioritize green infrastructure, pointing to existing areas like the Maidan, Rabindra Sarobar, and the Tollygunge Club as benchmarks for how integrated green spaces can successfully mitigate extreme heat.
For investors and policymakers, the core challenge remains the integration of sustainable practices into future urban expansion. The findings suggest that as the city continues its industrial and infrastructure development, the cost of mitigating environmental damage may rise if green preservation is not factored into long-term planning.
