Countries such as Sweden, Finland, Spain, Luxembourg, and the Czech Republic have reported significant modifications in their local butterfly populations. Sweden stands out with high rates of both expansion and contraction, while nations like the UK and Belgium have reported the most notable horizontal range contractions.

In contrast to some previous assumptions, horizontal expansions are occurring worldwide, including in tropical regions like Brazil and Benin. These shifts are often linked to climate-induced changes in temperature and rainfall patterns. For instance, the Tawny Coster butterfly in India has been documented expanding its range across South Asia into Australia, moving at approximately 135 kilometers per year. This demonstrates high mobility in certain species, whereas others make smaller adjustments within mountain habitats.

Agricultural and Biodiversity Implications

Beyond rising temperatures, the study highlights "human intrusions," "agriculture," and "aquaculture" as primary threats driving range contractions. While butterflies are often studied for their ecological value, these shifts hold broader significance for agricultural sectors. As key pollinators, changes in the distribution and population density of butterflies can directly impact crop yields and food security in affected regions.

The research emphasizes that protecting micro-refugia—small areas that remain stable despite regional climate changes—is essential to preventing biodiversity collapse.
