The ultra-supercritical 1600 MW Godda Thermal Power Plant, located in Jharkhand and previously dedicated solely to exporting power to Bangladesh, is scheduled to connect to India's national power grid by December 2025. This integration enables Adani Power Limited to participate in the Indian electricity market, particularly if Bangladesh experiences payment arrears or insufficient demand under their Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Recently, Bangladesh has cleared most of its outstanding dues, with only about half a month's payment pending.
Adani Power noted that the Godda plant achieved a Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 72% in Q2 FY24, which is significantly higher than the typical 60-65% PLF for thermal power plants in India. This improved operational efficiency is a key advantage.
Furthermore, Adani Power is aggressively expanding its footprint, having submitted bids for approximately 22,000 MW of thermal power capacity. The company is the L1 bidder for a 3200 MW project in Assam and has also bid for projects in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Gujarat. It is also developing four brownfield thermal projects totaling 6020 MW, with equipment orders already placed.
Impact This development is positive for Adani Power as it diversifies its revenue streams, reduces reliance on a single export market, and leverages its efficient plant operations. Integration with the Indian grid opens up a large domestic customer base. The company's extensive bidding for new projects indicates strong growth ambitions in India's energy sector. Rating: 8/10
Difficult Terms Explained: Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): A contract between a power producer and a buyer (like a utility company) that sets the terms and conditions for the sale of electricity, including price, quantity, and duration. Plant Load Factor (PLF): A measure of the average output of a power plant over a period compared to its maximum potential output. A higher PLF indicates better utilization and efficiency.
