Websol Energy System reported a 73% surge in net profit to ₹80.21 crore for the second quarter, while revenue more than doubled to ₹361.02 crore. The company is planning a 4 GW manufacturing expansion in West Bengal and diversifying into EPC services. Investors should monitor potential pressure on profit margins and execution risks regarding new projects.
Websol Energy System has reported a strong performance for the second quarter of the current fiscal year, driven by higher manufacturing volumes. The company’s net profit increased by 73.2% year-on-year, reaching ₹80.21 crore for the period ending September 30. This financial growth was supported by a significant rise in production efficiency, with revenue from operations climbing 114.6% to ₹361.02 crore compared to the same period last year.
Operational Performance and Expansion
The company’s manufacturing output reached 255 MW during the quarter, with capacity utilization levels hitting 91%. This high level of output was a primary contributor to the revenue growth. Looking ahead, the company is preparing to expand its footprint in the solar sector. It has secured 54.20 acres of land in West Bengal’s Falta Industrial Park for a new greenfield project. This planned facility aims to add 4 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity, which the company intends to roll out in two equal phases of 2 GW each.
Beyond its core manufacturing business, the board has approved a strategy to diversify into new service areas. This includes entering the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) sector, as well as independent power production and energy trading. These new segments are expected to change the company’s business model in the coming years.
Financial Context and Risks
While revenue and profit figures showed growth, the company’s profit margins faced some pressure. The operating margin narrowed to 35.5% from 43% in the previous year. This contraction highlights the impact of rising operational costs, which the company is managing alongside its growth strategy. On the balance sheet side, the firm has improved its financial position by repaying its outstanding term loans to the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), moving toward a debt-free status.
Technology Transition and Outlook
The company is currently working on upgrading its production lines to TOPCon technology, a more efficient solar cell manufacturing standard. Management has indicated that trial runs for this technology are expected to conclude before the end of the current fiscal year. With an existing order book valued at ₹1,280 crore, the company has a clear path for near-term operations. However, for investors, the key monitorables will be the successful execution of the 4 GW expansion project, the ability to manage operational costs to stabilize profit margins, and the market adoption of the new solar technology upgrade.
