Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), the renewable energy subsidiary of Tata Power, has successfully commissioned NHPC's 300 MW (AC) DCR-compliant solar project located in Karnisar Bhatiyan, Bikaner, Rajasthan. The construction of this significant project spanned two and a half years and involved the installation of approximately 7.75 lakh solar panels across a challenging desert landscape.

The project employs advanced technologies such as DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) compliant cells and bifacial modules, designed to optimize energy generation even in harsh environments. It is expected to supply its entire output to Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL), contributing an estimated 17,230 million units of green energy over its operational lifetime.

TPREL reported that the project's execution involved overcoming extreme temperature variations and logistical challenges related to vehicle movement across the difficult terrain. Specialized solutions, including precision ramming techniques and heat-resistant inverters, were deployed to ensure operational efficiency and reliability.

The commissioning also had a positive local impact, with more than 300 local workers employed and the development of local vendors supported.

This commissioning further strengthens TPREL's position in the renewable energy sector. Its third-party project portfolio now exceeds 4.9 GW, and its total renewable utility capacity has reached 11.6 GW. Of this total, 5.8 GW is currently operational, with another 5.8 GW under implementation and scheduled for commissioning over the next two years.

Impact

This news is significant for Tata Power and the Indian renewable energy sector. It demonstrates TPREL's capability to execute large-scale projects in challenging conditions, contributing to India's green energy targets. The expansion of its operational and under-implementation capacity signals strong growth potential for the company, likely positively influencing investor sentiment towards Tata Power.

Difficult Terms

DCR (Domestic Content Requirement): A policy that mandates a certain percentage of components in a renewable energy project must be sourced domestically. This is to promote local manufacturing and industries.

Bifacial modules: Solar panels that can capture sunlight from both the front and the rear sides, potentially increasing energy generation compared to traditional panels.

Commissioned: The process of officially starting or activating a new project or facility after its completion and testing.

Green energy: Energy generated from renewable sources like solar, wind, or hydro, which produce little to no greenhouse gas emissions.
