Suzlon Energy Q2 Revenue Jumps 26% But Margins Contract

Suzlon Energy reported a 26% rise in revenue to Rs 4,869 crore for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. Despite this growth, operating margins slipped to 14.8% due to higher costs and volatile project requirements. The company is now navigating increased competition from industrial giants like Adani and JSW Energy while managing a 6 GW order book.

Suzlon Energy reported a 26% increase in revenue to Rs 4,869 crore for the second quarter of the 2027 financial year. While the revenue growth shows solid demand, the company’s operating profit margins fell to 14.8%, compared to 18.6% in the same period last year. This decline highlights the challenge of balancing expansion with profitability in a market that is becoming increasingly crowded.

The margin pressure stems from a mix of factors, including volatile project requirements, fluctuations in commodity prices, and shifts in foreign exchange rates. Additionally, the company spent roughly Rs 50 crore on branding and strategy as part of its 'Suzlon 2.0' initiative. Management has indicated that these one-time expenses are expected to stabilize, and the firm aims to regain operating efficiency in the second half of the fiscal year.

Navigating a Changing Competitive Landscape

The Indian wind energy sector is currently seeing significant interest from major industrial conglomerates. Competitors like Adani and JSW Energy are increasing their presence in the market. While these companies often use their internal platforms for wind equipment production, Suzlon is focused on a service-oriented approach.

Suzlon’s current strategy relies on its 'DevCo' (or development company) model, which aims to capture value beyond just manufacturing wind turbines. The company has already secured 900 MW of orders through this model in the first half of the fiscal year. By offering a broader scope of services, the firm hopes to distinguish itself from competitors that primarily focus on captive power generation for their own use.

Outlook and Order Book

Despite the short-term margin pressure, Suzlon holds a solid order book of 6 GW, which provides work visibility for the next 18 months. The company maintained a 28-29% market share by order volume during the first half of the year. Investors may track whether the company can successfully improve its profit margins in the second half of the year by scaling up operations and moving past the initial costs of its new strategic initiatives.
