By bringing the casting of critical turbine components in-house, SpaceX aims to bypass the global manufacturing shortage for these high-temperature parts. The production of single-crystal turbine blades is a complex process historically controlled by a small group of specialized foundries. By controlling the supply chain, SpaceX intends to accelerate its power delivery timeline by as much as 18 months.
