SJVN Limited, a public sector undertaking, has officially commenced commercial operations for Unit-1 of its massive 1,320 megawatt (MW) Buxar Thermal Power Project located in Bihar. The project consists of two units, each with a capacity of 660 MW, and the first unit has achieved its Commercial Operation Date (COD) as announced on Friday. This significant development is being executed through SJVN Thermal Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. The Buxar Thermal Power Project is designed to generate approximately 9,828.72 million units of electricity annually. A substantial portion, 85% of this power, has been secured by the state of Bihar through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Impact: This project is poised to substantially increase power availability in Bihar and the wider eastern region of India. It aims to mitigate peak-hour electricity shortages and bolster the region's overall energy security, which is crucial for industrial and domestic consumption. Rating: 8/10 Difficult Terms: * Commercial Operation Date (COD): The date from which a power plant officially starts generating and selling electricity commercially. * Thermal Power Project: A power plant that generates electricity by burning fossil fuels, such as coal, to heat water and produce steam, which then drives turbines. * Megawatt (MW): A unit of power equal to one million watts, commonly used to measure the capacity of electricity generation. * Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): A long-term contract between an electricity generator and a buyer (like a state utility) that fixes the price and quantity of electricity to be purchased.
