Power Grid Order Book Hits Rs 2.2 Lakh Crore as Capex Scales

Power Grid Corporation of India is focusing on accelerating project commissioning, backed by a record Rs 2.2 lakh crore order book. The utility has set a capital spending target of Rs 37,000 crore for FY27 to expand transmission infrastructure for renewable energy. Investors are tracking how quickly the company can turn these large projects into operational assets to maintain its consistent revenue and dividend payouts.

Power Grid Corporation of India, the nation's primary power transmission utility, has confirmed a record unexecuted order book of Rs 2.2 lakh crore. This reflects the company's vital role in connecting India’s rapidly growing renewable energy sources to the national grid. The firm is now shifting its focus from winning new contracts to the faster commissioning of these ongoing projects to ensure steady revenue growth.

This transition is driven by the government's push to integrate wind and solar energy into the national system. The Green Energy Corridor Phase-III initiative is a significant driver of this demand, requiring large-scale transmission infrastructure. Power Grid has already secured major projects, such as the Rs 26,000-crore Barmer high-voltage direct current line and the Gujarat renewable energy integration scheme, which contribute to its massive order backlog.

To support this intense phase of activity, the company has set a capital spending target of Rs 37,000 crore for FY27. It has also received board approval to raise its borrowing limit to Rs 2.2 lakh crore, ensuring it has enough financial headroom to fund these large infrastructure tasks. The company’s ability to manage this capital spending while maintaining operational efficiency is central to its future performance.

Evidence of this ramp-up is visible in the company’s recent performance. In the first quarter, the company turned construction work into operational assets worth Rs 5,277 crore, compared to Rs 1,683 crore in the same period a year earlier. This acceleration indicates that the company is successfully converting its order book into functional assets that generate steady, regulated returns. By moving these projects into the operational phase faster, the company aims to ensure the predictability of its earnings.

For investors, Power Grid is typically viewed as a defensive utility stock. Its business model, which is heavily regulated, limits the scope for sudden, high-growth surprises but offers a layer of stability that is often preferred by institutional investors. The stock currently trades at approximately 15 times its estimated earnings for FY28. Additionally, the company is known for its dividend consistency, with a yield estimated between 3.5% and 4%, which remains a point of interest for income-focused shareholders.

The most important monitorable for investors in the coming quarters will be the execution speed. The company's future revenue will depend on how efficiently it can complete these projects and integrate them into the grid. Shareholders may track quarterly updates on project capitalization and the conversion of the backlog to judge whether the current pace of work can be sustained.
