The state-run utility aims to increase its total generation capacity to 250 GW by 2037. Phased Investment and Capital Allocation

The company has divided this capital expenditure into three distinct phases to manage its balance sheet and operational execution. In the near term, ₹1.08 lakh crore is planned for FY26-27, with ₹56,000 crore already committed. The middle phase, covering FY28 to FY32, will see an investment of ₹5.97 lakh crore, largely directed toward expanding its renewable energy footprint. The final phase from FY33 to FY37 will account for the largest outlay of ₹9.63 lakh crore, with a primary focus on scaling up nuclear power capacity. These annual spending targets are significantly higher than the company's historical capital expenditure, which has typically ranged between ₹35,000 crore and ₹40,000 crore per year.

Strategic Focus on Nuclear Energy

NTPC is betting on nuclear power as a long-term growth driver, targeting 30 GW of capacity by 2047. To achieve this, the company has initiated site feasibility studies across several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. Management indicated that nuclear power is expected to become a core growth segment after 2032. The company plans to explore both conventional pressurized heavy water reactors and newer advanced technologies to build this capacity.
