NHPC Eyes ₹18,700 Crore Support for Sawalkote Hydropower Project

The government is considering a ₹18,700 crore subordinated debt package for NHPC's 1,856 MW Sawalkote project in Jammu and Kashmir. This financing aims to support the massive ₹31,380 crore project cost. Investors should monitor how this funding impacts the company's capital spending plans, especially given the historical execution risks associated with large-scale regional hydropower developments.

The Ministry of Power is evaluating a significant financial proposal to support NHPC Ltd’s 1,856 MW Sawalkote hydroelectric project in Jammu and Kashmir. The proposal involves providing approximately ₹18,700 crore in subordinated debt, a form of financing that generally comes with different repayment terms compared to standard loans, potentially helping the company manage the total project cost of ₹31,380 crore more effectively.

This funding support is currently in the exploratory stage and requires clearance from the expenditure finance committee, followed by final governmental approvals. If approved, it would mark a strategic move by the government to accelerate the development of hydropower assets in the region, which has gained momentum alongside broader national infrastructure initiatives.

The Sawalkote project, located on the Chenab River, is a key component of NHPC's strategy to expand its capacity. While the government has recently accelerated approvals for several large-scale hydropower projects, investors should remain aware of the company's capital allocation. Large projects in complex terrains like Jammu and Kashmir are historically prone to delays due to technical, geological, and regional challenges. These execution risks can often lead to project timelines extending beyond initial estimates and may affect the capital expenditure cycle.

Financially, NHPC has shown steady operational performance. In the first quarter of the 2027 financial year, the company reported an operational revenue of ₹3,808 crore, marking an 18.5% growth compared to the previous year. Net profit for the same period stood at ₹1,096 crore, with EBITDA margins reaching 61.8%. Despite these stable numbers, the company faces the constant need to manage high capital requirements for its large pipeline of projects, including Sawalkote and the Subansiri Lower project.

On the market front, NHPC shares have recently been trading in the ₹76–₹77 range on the exchanges. The stock's movement is often influenced by broader sector trends and the pace of capacity addition. Looking ahead, the most critical monitorable for investors will be the official status of the subordinated debt proposal and any updates on the project's construction timeline, especially the progress of tenders for the main dam and related infrastructure works. Regulatory clarity and the stability of long-term power purchase agreements will also be key factors influencing the long-term feasibility of the project.
