L&T Wins Major Battery Storage Order In Middle East

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a 'Major' contract to build three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in the Middle East, with a combined capacity of 6 GWh. The order highlights the company’s expansion into energy transition infrastructure. For investors, the win bolsters L&T's large order book, though successful execution in international markets remains a key point to track.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won significant contracts to develop three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in the Middle East. The mandate involves engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work, which covers the entire setup of these storage facilities, grid interconnections, pooling substations, and underground cabling. The projects will provide a combined storage capacity of 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh), with each facility designed for a four-hour storage duration.

L&T classifies this award as a 'Major' order. In the company’s project tracking terminology, a 'Major' classification typically indicates a contract value ranging from ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore. This project is part of a growing trend in the Middle East, where utilities are investing heavily in storage technology to better manage the stability of their power grids as they integrate more renewable energy sources.

The technical scope of the project includes the use of liquid-cooling technology. This setup is designed to improve power density, enhance safety, and extend the operational life of the battery systems compared to standard cooling methods. By opting for this technology, the project aims to support reliable power dispatch, storing energy during off-peak hours and releasing it when electricity demand on the grid is high.

For L&T, this win is a strategic move to strengthen its presence in the international energy transition segment. As global demand for grid-scale storage rises, the company is positioning itself to capture a larger share of this market, moving beyond its traditional construction and engineering base. This project adds to a robust company order book, which has already crossed the ₹8 lakh crore mark, providing strong revenue visibility for the coming years.

While the order adds to the backlog, investors often watch execution risk in such large-scale international infrastructure projects. Projects of this complexity require strict adherence to timelines, local regulatory compliance, and high safety standards. The ability to manage these factors while maintaining project margins will be important. Moving forward, shareholders may track updates on the project's construction timeline, commissioning dates, and whether L&T secures further similar mandates in the region to support its long-term growth in the energy storage sector.
