Karnataka has reached a significant energy milestone, with renewable sources now providing 70% of the state’s electricity demand. This achievement is supported by a total renewable capacity of 27.3 gigawatts, including approximately 11.5 gigawatts of solar and 8.5 gigawatts of wind energy. The state has set an ambitious target to expand its total power generation capacity to 66 gigawatts by 2030 to keep pace with rising demand from industrial sectors, electric vehicles, and data centers.
Grid Challenges and Storage Needs
While the high share of renewable energy is a positive development for environmental goals, it brings operational challenges for the power grid. Because solar and wind energy are not constant, Karnataka faces difficulty maintaining a stable supply during evening peak hours when solar generation drops. To address this, the state is prioritizing investments in battery storage and pumped-storage projects. These are intended to help balance the grid, ensuring that power remains available even when renewable inputs fluctuate. Financial Health of Distribution Utilities
Behind the clean energy expansion, the financial health of the state’s power distribution companies, known as ESCOMs, remains a key monitorable. Despite the growth in renewable capacity, these utilities have struggled with mounting debt, which reached a collective total of ₹42,750 crore as of early 2026. This financial stress has forced regulators to intervene to ensure the viability of the power supply chain. In response, the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission approved a 'true-up' charge—effectively an additional fee of 56 paise per unit for consumers of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company—to recover revenue gaps from previous years. This measure highlights the difficulty of funding infrastructure upgrades while keeping operational costs manageable.
