This capacity will be added through two major projects: the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul facility and the 624 MW Kiru project. Both sites are located in the Kishtwar district along the Chenab river system and its tributary, the Marusudar.

Project Specifications and Power Output

Developed by Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd, the Pakal Dul project is designed with four generating units of 250 MW each. Once fully functional, it is expected to generate approximately 3,230 million units of electricity annually. The smaller but significant 624 MW Kiru project is projected to contribute another 2,272 million units of electricity each year. For investors, the completion of these assets is a key metric, as they represent a substantial capital investment intended to strengthen the region’s long-term power generation profile.

Strategic Energy and Fiscal Context

This expansion is part of a larger government focus on utilizing western river systems for energy production. The commissioning of these units is viewed as a way to reduce Jammu and Kashmir's dependence on power purchased from external grids. By increasing local generation, the region aims to improve its energy security and potentially alleviate some of the fiscal pressure caused by high energy procurement costs. Beyond the projects slated for this year, authorities are working toward the completion of the 850 MW Ratle project and the 540 MW Kwar project, which have a target completion date of 2028. While these additions signal a major scale-up, they are subject to the standard risks associated with large-scale infrastructure in hilly terrains, including potential delays in construction, environmental clearances, and geological challenges.
