Landmark Green Ammonia Project Launched
India is poised to become a significant player in the global clean energy market with the USD 10 billion green hydrogen and green ammonia project underway in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The ambitious venture by AM Green is set to reach a crucial construction milestone with its first major equipment erection ceremony on January 17, attended by state leaders. This project underscores India's strategic push to emerge as a leading supplier of green energy to international markets, including Germany, Japan, and Singapore.
Scale and Scope of Investment
Representing one of the largest clean-energy investments in India to date, the project boasts a total investment of USD 10 billion. AM Green is developing India's first and the world's largest green ammonia complex, aiming for a planned capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum. This is being achieved through the brownfield conversion of an existing ammonia-urea facility. The facility is expected to generate approximately 8,000 jobs during the construction phase, with substantial high-skill employment opportunities to follow during operations and in allied sectors like renewable energy, logistics, and port services.
Global Export Ambitions
The Kakinada complex is slated for phased commissioning, starting with 0.5 million tonnes per annum by 2027, scaling up to 1 million tonnes by 2028, and reaching its full capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum by 2030. Once operational, the facility will facilitate India's first exports of green ammonia, a crucial commodity used globally for clean shipping fuel, power generation, and as a carrier for green hydrogen. AM Green has already secured long-term supply agreements with Germany's Uniper and is in active discussions with buyers in Japan and Singapore, establishing India's initial green energy export linkages with Europe and key Asian economies.
Andhra Pradesh's Strategic Push
The integrated project encompasses 7.5 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity, 1,950 megawatts of electrolyser capacity, and 2 gigawatts of round-the-clock renewable power supported by pumped hydro storage. This includes India's first such facility at Pinnapuram. The project aligns directly with Andhra Pradesh's Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, reinforcing the state's ambition to become India's principal hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia. This initiative marks a profound shift from energy import dependence to clean-energy exports, positioning Andhra Pradesh at the center of the global green-energy value chain.
