Grid Under Pressure from Extreme Demand
India's power grid is under significant stress, experiencing four days of record-breaking electricity consumption. Peak demand reached a new high of 270.82 gigawatts (GW) on May 21, the highest for the current summer. Demand climbed steadily from 257.37 GW on May 18 to 265.44 GW by May 20. In response, the Ministry of Power has advised citizens to conserve energy, particularly during peak hours from 2 pm to 4 pm daily.
Intense Heatwave Fuels Energy Surge
A relentless heatwave is the main reason for the surge in electricity demand across large parts of India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported temperatures above 45°C in many districts across northern, western, and central India. Banda in Uttar Pradesh recorded a season-high 48°C. Health warnings are in place for Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, with authorities urging residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
Impact on Power Networks
These sustained high demand spikes are pressuring power generation and distribution systems, risking localized shortages and grid stability issues. The extreme weather highlights India's growing energy needs during severe climate events and the importance of efficient infrastructure. The ongoing heatwave suggests these demand levels may continue, requiring constant vigilance from consumers and energy providers.
Managing Future Load
As India faces extreme heat and rising power needs, the focus is on effective load management and grid resilience. Government appeals for energy conservation are a crucial first step. Long-term solutions require investment in generation capacity, grid modernization, and demand-side management technologies. The unprecedented demand shows the energy sector's vulnerability to climate impacts and the need for proactive planning to meet future energy needs, especially during peak seasons.
