India's Power Demand Shatters Record Amid Intensifying Heatwave
Overview

India's peak power demand hit an all-time high of 257.37 GW on Monday, fueled by intense heatwave conditions driving up air conditioner and cooler usage. The grid successfully met this surge, but the Power Ministry projects demand could reach 270 GW this summer. Heatwave alerts are in effect for large parts of northwest and central India, with temperatures nearing 45 degrees Celsius in some regions.

Record Power Consumption

India's electricity demand surged to an unprecedented 257.37 gigawatts (GW) on Monday, shattering previous records. This peak demand, occurring at 15:42 hours, was primarily driven by residential and commercial users deploying cooling devices like air conditioners and desert coolers to combat a severe and widespread heatwave. The nation's power infrastructure successfully met the demand, averting any supply disruptions.

Summer Projections and Heatwave Warnings

The Power Ministry anticipates peak demand could climb as high as 270 GW during the remainder of the summer. This projection comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued heatwave conditions across large swathes of northwest and central India through May 24, with some areas experiencing severe heatwave conditions. Cities like Bathinda and parts of Haryana and Rajasthan reported highs exceeding 46 degrees Celsius on Monday, while Delhi neared 44 degrees Celsius.

Escalating Demand Trends

Electricity demand has been steadily rising since April, accelerating into May. Experts attribute this trend to increasing temperatures, leading to more frequent and extensive use of cooling appliances by both domestic and commercial consumers. Last summer's peak demand was 242.77 GW, which was surpassed multiple times this year, including a 250 GW record in May 2024 and the recent 257.37 GW high on Monday.
