India's fuel exports experienced a significant drop of 21% in October, decreasing to 1.25 million barrels per day (bpd) from 1.58 mbd in September. This reduction was primarily driven by refiners channeling more fuel into the domestic market to meet heightened demand during the festive season. Furthermore, operational challenges, notably an issue at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd's (HPCL) Mumbai refinery caused by contaminated crude, led to a tighter domestic supply situation. The exports of key fuels including petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) all declined. Diesel, a major component of India's fuel exports, saw a 12.5% decrease.
Nayara Energy, a private refiner, also faced significant export challenges due to international sanctions, compelling it to concentrate its supplies within India. The Indian government provided support, including enhanced rail transport capacity, to help Nayara meet local demand.
Domestic fuel consumption showed mixed trends, with petrol sales rising 7% year-on-year and LPG sales growing 5.4%, while diesel sales saw a slight dip of 0.5%. Analysts suggest that exports may rebound in November and December as domestic demand stabilizes and refinery operations normalize.
Impact: This decline in exports can affect the profitability of Indian refining companies and potentially lead to increased domestic fuel prices if supply is not managed effectively. It highlights the sensitivity of India's energy sector to both domestic demand fluctuations and international geopolitical factors. Rating: 6/10
