India and Russia are strengthening their strategic energy partnership, with the upcoming 23rd annual summit expected to accelerate civil nuclear cooperation.
Key areas of discussion include the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and increasing the domestic manufacturing of nuclear power plant components in India.
Alexei Likhachev, the head of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, met with Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Director General of India's Department of Atomic Energy, to explore new nuclear power projects and broader cooperation in the nuclear fuel cycle.
Progress on the flagship Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) was reviewed. Units 1 and 2 are operational, supplying power to southern India. Unit 3 is in pre-commissioning stages, and Unit 4 is under construction. The third phase, Units 5 and 6, is also under active construction.
Impact: This collaboration is expected to bolster India's energy security by expanding its nuclear power capacity. The emphasis on localization will stimulate India's manufacturing sector, creating opportunities for domestic companies in the production of specialized nuclear equipment. It also deepens the strategic and technological ties between India and Russia. Rating: 8/10
Definitions: Small Modular Reactors (SMRs): These are advanced nuclear reactors with a lower power output than traditional ones, designed to be manufactured in factories and transported to a site for assembly. They are often considered safer, more flexible, and potentially cheaper than conventional large-scale reactors. Nuclear Fuel Cycle: This refers to all stages of nuclear fuel's use, from mining and milling uranium, through fuel enrichment, fabrication, use in reactors, and finally, the reprocessing or disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP): It is the largest nuclear power station in India, located in Tamil Nadu, built with Russian collaboration. It is a flagship project symbolizing Indo-Russian energy cooperation. Localization: In this context, it means increasing the proportion of components, materials, and services for nuclear power plants that are sourced and manufactured within India, rather than being imported. Pre-commissioning Activities: These are tests and checks performed on a new power plant or its components before it is officially put into operation to ensure everything is functioning correctly and safely. Testing of safety systems on an open reactor: This is a critical phase during pre-commissioning where safety mechanisms are tested while the reactor core is exposed (but not yet critical) to ensure they perform as designed under various simulated conditions.
